Training at HSC is based on standards established by the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) and combines classroom theory with time spent on the water sailing. Designed as a progression of levels of proficiency from beginner (Level 1) to advanced (Level 6). All courses except Silver Sail last two weeks and run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m, Mon - Fri at Hollyburn Sailing Club, 1326 Argyle Street, West Vancouver. We are also pleased to offer a Learn to Race program for kids who want to learn the basics of racing.
Certification
Students will be evaluated at the completion of each session on theoretical and practical knowledge according to the Canadian Yachting Association standards. All courses are taught by CYA certified instructors.
What You Need to Bring
- A Canadian Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (lifejacket).
- Non-marking soft soled shoes that will not slip off in the water. Flip-flops and slip-on footwear (other than aquasocks) are not permitted.
- Clothing appropriate for the weather
- Hat, Sunscreen
- Change of clothes and towel

Cancellation Policy
There is no refund for cancellations made 7 days or less prior to the beginning of a
course. There are no refunds under any circumstances once a course has started. Exceptions to this rule may be made if cancellation is necessary due to injury or
illness. There is a $35 administration fee for all cancellations.
The basic course for new sailors or those with little experience. Students learn the basics while sailing our 420 and Pirate sailboats. The course includes safety, knots, terminology, as well, skipper and crew work at all points of sail. Two or three students to a boat creates teamwork in a fun, safe, and socially rewarding environment. On completion of Levels I & II students can sail confidently in winds below 10 knots (8-16 km/hr).
Prerequisites: Participants must be aged ten or over and must be able to swim.

On completion of White Sail Level III, students will be able to sail with confidence, competently in wind speeds of 4-9 knots (8-16 km/hr) and perform standard sailing skills proficiently without supervision. Emphasis is on safety, terminology, rights of way, seamanship and improving on-the-water boat-handling skills.

The one-week Learn to Race course introduces the sailor to the joys and challenges of racing. Participants will improve sailing skills and learn the basics of racing, all in a friendly learning environment. The emphasis is on strategy, tactics, and regatta preparation. This course takes place in Lasers, Laser Radials and a variety of double-handed boats (Laser II’s and 420’s).
Prerequisites: White Sail III, Participants must be aged ten or over and must be able to swim.

Sailing skills are refined and improved to meet heavier wind conditions. Advanced sailing techniques including backwards sailing, rudderless sailing, sail theory, and sail trim are introduced. On completion of this level, sailors will be able to understand and apply the basic principles of sail trim and boat tuning for optimum performance. This course takes place in Laser II’s and 420’s.

This exciting course takes place in double-hander 420's. Sailors move on to the challenge of spinnaker handling, trapeze work, sail theory, and basic boat maintenance. Sailors are challenged as they master spinnaker skills while sailing in up to 15 knots of wind. Successful completion of this course can require more than one session.

This level of the CYA Learn to Sail program is an introduction to racing. On completion of the three-week Silver Sail VI, the candidate will be able to compete in a race with a sound understanding of the racing rules, sailing theory and performance boat tuning. Sailors will be able to sail in wind strengths of up to 18 knots (35 km/hr).
