Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register?

All Hollyburn Sailing program registrations go through West Vancouver Recreation Services. You can register online through them at the following link: http://webreg.westvancouver.net, or you can call 604-921-2100. You can also click on the appropriate link for the course of interest from our Lessons page to go directly to the registration page.

At what age do you start sailors?

Due to the nature of the onshore wind and beach at Ambleside as well as the ramp, which requires physical strength to pull boats up to the yard, we require students to be a minimum of 10 years old.

What kind of boats do students train in?

The club owns a large fleet of two-handed boats, comprising 420’s, Pirates, Flying Juniors and Laser II’s. We also own 8 Lasers, 6 with radial rigs. Depending on the program and individual proficiency levels, students will sail one of these boats.

What should students bring with them each day?

Students should bring the following items:

  • A Canadian Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD/lifejacket).
  • Non-marking soft soled shoes that will not slip off in the water. Flip-flops and slip-on footwear (other than aquasocks) are not permitted.
  • Clothing appropriate for the weather
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Towel
  • Change of clothes
  • Bag lunch

Are there any course materials required?

Yes. Students are required to purchase a copy of:

  • CYA Manual-Basic Sailing Skills —White Sail I, II, III ($20)
  • CYA Manual-Advanced Sailing Skills— Learn to Race, Bronze IV, Bronze V ($25)

These will be available to buy on the first day of each course.

What kind of certification do students receive on successful completion?

Students will be evaluated at the completion of the session on theoretical and practical knowledge according to Canadian Yachting Association standards. At the end of each session, students will receive their official certificate by mail. All courses are taught by CYA certified instructors.

What is your cancellation policy?

There is a $35 administration fee for all cancellations.

There is no refund for cancellations made 7 days or less prior to the beginning of a course.

There are no refunds under any circumstances once a course has started. Exceptions to this rule may be made if cancellation is necessary due to injury or illness. To cancel out of a current sailing session, please email the training director at training@hollyburnsailingclub.ca.
